Today’s image of philanthropy could be applied to different foundation sectors across the globe. However, it is taken from the European Community Foundation Initiative’s Guide to Community Foundations in Europe; it is thus particularly relevant for highlighting the diverse and flexible nature of community foundations:
“[C]ommunity foundations are like amoebae – protean in their form and taking multiple shapes to address complex needs in our societies.”
Böllhoff, A., Engelke, J., Küstermann, B., & Pätsch, A. (2017). Building Bridges for Local Good. A guide to community foundations in Europe. Berlin: Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen. p.18
Drawing on some of the findings from our ‘Images of Philanthropy’ Initiative, each entry in this accompanying blog series introduces one image that has been put forward in an academic or non-academic context to depict or characterise an aspect of philanthropy in its different forms and expressions.
